Xavier Bonnefont, Mayor of Angouleme, announced the news on the social network Facebook: Angouleme was selected to join the closed circle of creative cities of Unesco in the category literature. "Today, Angouleme is definitely consecrated the world capital of comics ", Congratulates the mayor of the Charente prefecture. Only four French cities were previously labeled "creative cities" of Unesco: Saint-Etienne (design), Lyon, Enghien-les-Bains (digital arts) and Limoges (arts and crafts).
In its file, Angouleme had put forward a four-year action plan 2019-2023 built on nine proposals for comics. Among the proposals, the creation of an international prize for creativity by comics in the field of urban design, in partnership with the creative cities of Saint-Etienne, Gratz and Montreal. The plan evokes both the defense of creation by the other parties and the transformation, as early as 2019, of the National Meetings of Comics in International Encounters or the creation of a network of comic book festivals.
The designation of Angouleme will be officially proclaimed during the general assembly of Unesco in November in Paris. With Angouleme, 65 other cities obtain the "creative city" label from UNESCO, including Metz, the other French city on the list, in the music category. This brings to 246 the number of creative cities of Unesco in the world.
