Ronald van Meygaarden, who has been nominated as mayor of Boxtel in Brabant, is partyless. The city council unanimously supported his nomination. It was previously reported that he belongs to the Code Oranje reform movement, but he contradicts that.
"I come from the local government and I am a member of a local party, West-Betuwe village interests. But I have to cancel that membership because I am going to live in a different municipality," says Van Meygaarden.
Code Oranje was set up for the parliamentary elections and wants to give citizens more say through referenda, for example. The movement participated in the provincial elections in Gelderland, Noord-Brabant, Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland, but did not receive any States seat.
Van Meygaarden was an alderman for nine years in the municipality of Geldermalsen. In Boxtel he succeeds the acting mayor Naterop. Yesterday his nomination was announced in the city council.
"We were looking for a leader with guts, and we found one," said the chairman of the confidential committee who announced the nomination in De Gelderlander. "He has a personality with a kind of wow effect. And also a dose of humor."
A further introduction to the new mayor was not made yesterday, because Van Meygaarden is in bed with the flu.
Minister Ollongren of the Interior and Kingdom Relations and the king still have to ratify the appointment, but that counts as a formality.
